Description
Cladophora aegagropila is not actually a plant, but a ball of algae that is a decorative exception to the rule of avoiding algae at all costs. It is normally found in shallow lakes, where the round shape is created by wave action. In the aquarium it must be turned regularly to maintain the spherical shape. Cladophora aegagrophila usually grows to 3-10 cm and can be divided into smaller clumps, which over time form the spherical shape or a flat carpet-like growth when fixed to roots and rocks. It is a protected species in various places in Japan.
