Description

Zebra Blue Claw Crayfish - Cherax peknyi

The Zebra Blue Claw crayfish (Cherax peknyi), also known as the blue clawed tiger crayfish, originates from Papua New Guinea. With its impressively blue-colored claws and high-contrast striped pattern, this crayfish is a fascinating eye-catcher in the aquarium. It reaches a size of up to 12 cm and can live for up to 5 years.

We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:

  • Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
  • Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
  • Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium.

Keeping and care

An aquarium of 80 liters or more is suitable for keeping the Zebra Blue Claw crayfish, ideally with numerous hiding places such as caves and roots. As this crayfish can be territorial, there should be enough places to retreat to create stress-free areas.

Water values and temperature

The Zebra Blue Claw crayfish prefers temperatures between 20 and 25 °C and a pH value of 6.5 to 8. Medium-hard water with a carbonate hardness of up to 20° dGH supports stable moulting and contributes to the health of the carapace.

Socialization

This crayfish is peaceful and can be kept with robust shrimps and small fish as long as they are not in the substrate area. However, smaller snails are potential prey and therefore less suitable. As Cherax peknyi must withdraw after moulting, it is important to provide a stable structure in the tank.

Breeding

Breeding in the aquarium works well if sufficient space and hiding places are provided. After mating, the female carries up to 80 eggs on her swimming legs, from which young crayfish hatch after 4 to 6 weeks. It is important for the young to have plenty of hiding places to avoid cannibalism.

Diet

The Zebra Blue Claw crayfish is omnivorous and eats both plant and animal food. Young crayfish prefer protein-rich food, while adult animals mainly require plant-based food such as spinach, pumpkin or leaves. Supplementary crayfish food and frozen food round off the diet.
