Underwater crab "Towuti" - Parathelphusa ferruginea

The underwater crab "Towuti" (Parathelphusa ferruginea) is a robust and interesting aquarium crab from the waters of Lake Towuti in Indonesia. Its earthy, reddish-brown hues make it a unique inhabitant for freshwater aquariums, and its active behavior brings liveliness to any underwater landscape.

Origin and habitat

The Parathelphusa ferruginea originates from Lake Towuti, one of the oldest lakes on the island of Sulawesi. In its natural environment, it lives close to the shore between stones, plants and roots, which provide shelter and food. In the aquarium, this habitat should be made as natural as possible by using aquarium plants, stones and caves in order to meet the natural needs of these crabs.

Keeping in the aquarium

The Towuti crab is an active and climbing species that likes to explore its surroundings. Due to these characteristics, the aquarium should be well covered, as the crab can climb well over its claws and tries to break out of unsecured aquaria.

A well-structured aquarium with various hiding places and a sandy or gravelly substrate is ideal for this crab. It can be kept well with peaceful fish and other invertebrates as long as there is enough space and hiding places.

Diet

Parathelphusa ferruginea is an omnivore. In its natural habitat it feeds on plant and animal remains. In the aquarium, the diet should be varied, with a mixture of plant food sources such as vegetables and algae as well as protein-rich food, for example in the form of frozen food or small pellets.

Water values and care

The Towuti crab prefers a water temperature of 22 to 28 °C and feels at home in soft to medium-hard water. Clean water and good filtration are crucial for their health. Regular water changes are important to keep the water quality stable.
