Super Orange Crayfish - Cherax snowden

The Super Orange Crayfish (Cherax snowden) impresses with its intense orange coloration and is an impressive addition to any aquarium. Originally from Papua New Guinea, this crayfish reaches a size of up to 20 cm and exhibits calm and peaceful behavior. Its bright color and adaptability make it attractive for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:

  • Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
  • Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
  • Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium.

Keeping and care

An aquarium of 80 liters or more provides sufficient space for the Super Orange Crayfish. The crayfish prefers a sandy or fine-grained gravel substrate and plenty of hiding places, such as roots and caves. As it occasionally digs, all structures should be firmly secured.

Water values and temperature

Temperatures between 20 and 25 °C are ideal for keeping Cherax snowden. The pH value should be between 6.5 and 7.5, with a medium to high water hardness (5-20 °dGH). Regular water changes and good filtration are important to keep the water clear and clean.

Socialization

The Super Orange Crayfish is a peaceful conspecific and can be socialized well with dwarf shrimps and small to medium-sized, peaceful fish. Bottom-dwelling species are less suitable as conflicts can occasionally occur. Robust plants are not usually nibbled on.

Breeding

Breeding Cherax snowden is usually easy: after mating, the female carries up to 80 eggs on her swimming legs, which hatch after around 7 to 9 weeks. The young crayfish require a separate rearing tank with sufficient hiding places in order to grow safely.

Nutrition

The Super Orange crayfish is an omnivore and requires a varied diet. In addition to commercially available crayfish food, vegetables such as spinach, zucchini and autumn leaves are welcome. Occasional frozen food supports intensive coloration and healthy growth.
