Red Brick crayfish - Cherax wagenknechtae
The Red Brick crayfish (Cherax wagenknechtae) originates from the rivers of West Papua and stands out due to its characteristic reddish-brown to dark red coloration. This impressive crayfish reaches a size of up to 12 cm and impresses with its calm and peaceful nature. The Red Brick crayfish is robust and therefore suitable for beginners in the aquarium hobby.
We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:
- Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
- Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
- Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium.
Keeping and care
An aquarium with at least 80 liters and a stable, structured setup offers the Red Brick crayfish a species-appropriate home. Stones, roots and hiding places are important, as this crayfish prefers shady areas in the wild. A sandy or fine-grained gravel substrate makes it easier for them to dig.
Water values and temperature
The Red Brick crayfish prefers temperatures between 18 and 24 °C and a pH value in the neutral to slightly alkaline range (6.5 to 8). A medium water hardness of 5 to 15 °dGH is ideal. Clean, oxygen-rich water and regular water changes contribute to the health of this animal.
Socialization
The Red Brick crayfish can be kept with small, peaceful fish and shrimps. However, other large or bottom-oriented animals should be avoided in order to prevent territorial disputes. As Cherax wagenknechtae generally leaves plants untouched, it is also suitable for planted aquaria.
Breeding
Breeding the Red Brick crayfish is often successful. The female carries up to 50 eggs, which hatch after around 7 to 9 weeks. Young crayfish should be housed in a separate breeding area as they are prone to cannibalism. Numerous hiding places are crucial for the survival of the young animals.
Diet
The Red Brick crayfish is an omnivore. A varied diet of special crayfish food, plant matter such as spinach and foliage as well as occasional frozen food promotes its well-being and ensures vibrant coloration. Brown foliage as a permanent supply in the aquarium supports health and breeding.
