Description

Orange dwarf crayfish CPO - Cambarellus Patzcuarensis

The orange dwarf crayfish, often known as CPO (Cambarellus patzcuarensis "orange"), is a popular breeding form of the Mexican striped dwarf crayfish. With a size of around 4 to 5 cm and its eye-catching, bright orange coloration, it is a highlight in the aquarium hobby, especially for smaller tanks. Females are slightly larger than males. CPOs have a lifespan of 1.5 to 2 years and are ideal for beginners in the aquarium hobby.

We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:

  • Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
  • Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
  • Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium

Keeping and care

CPOs are relatively easy to care for and require an aquarium of at least 40 liters. The tank should be well structured, with plenty of hiding places such as roots, stones and plants. The crayfish need safe places to retreat to, especially after moulting. A dark substrate accentuates their striking color perfectly. Plants in the tank are not damaged by CPOs, which means they can be kept well in planted aquaria or aquascapes.

Water values and temperature

The optimum water values for Cambarellus patzcuarensis are a temperature of 20 to 26 °C, a pH value of 7 to 9 and a water hardness of 12 to 18 °dGH. Water that is too soft can lead to problems during moulting, so care should be taken to maintain a balanced water hardness.

Socialization

CPOs are peaceful crustaceans that can live well with smaller fish, shrimps and snails. Nevertheless, sufficient hiding places should be provided so that the crayfish can retreat if necessary, especially during the moulting phase. Socialization with larger, more aggressive species should be avoided.

Breeding

Breeding the CPO is uncomplicated. The crayfish are sexually mature at around 4 months of age. After mating, the female carries the eggs on her pleopods (swimming legs) for approx. 3 to 4 weeks before the young hatch. These are very small at first and only develop their bright orange color after a few weeks. The young crayfish need plenty of hiding places and special superfine food.

Diet

The CPO is an omnivore that needs both plant and animal food. A varied diet of frozen food, special crab food and brown autumn leaves is ideal. Occasional vegetables, such as cucumber, can also be offered. A protein-rich diet is particularly important to promote the growth and health of the crayfish.
