Orange Tip crayfish - Cherax snowden
The Orange Tip crayfish (Cherax snowden), also known as the fire crayfish, originates from Papua New Guinea. The striking, dark green to brown coloration with bright orange claw tips makes this crayfish an impressive inhabitant for larger aquariums. With a size of up to 12 cm and a life expectancy of 3-5 years, it is particularly popular with aquarists.
We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:
- Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
- Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
- Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium.
Keeping and care
The Orange Tip crayfish requires an aquarium of 100 liters or more that is equipped with gravel or sand and numerous hiding places. The set-up should be stable and tip-proof as it likes to dig and use hiding places. Robust plants are possible, as the crayfish does not usually eat them.
Water values and temperature
This crayfish prefers temperatures between 20 and 25 °C and a pH value in the range of 6.5 to 7.5. A medium water hardness of up to 20 °dGH is ideal to promote healthy moulting and a long life. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential.
Socialization
Cherax snowden can easily be kept with small, peaceful fish and shrimps. However, other bottom-dwelling species or very small fish could be regarded as prey. Its calm behavior makes it ideal for community aquariums as long as sufficient hiding places are available.
Breeding
Breeding is possible in a sufficiently large and structured tank. Females carry up to 50 eggs after mating, which hatch after 7-9 weeks. The young should be reared separately to minimize the risk of cannibalism.
Diet
The Orange Tip crayfish is omnivorous and requires a balanced mixture of plant and animal foods. In addition to foliage and vegetables such as spinach and zucchini, it is happy to eat frozen food and special crayfish food. A varied diet promotes color intensity and health.
