Hoa Creek crayfish - Cherax pulcher
The Hoa Creek crayfish (Cherax pulcher), also known as the blue and pink crayfish, originates from the waters of Papua New Guinea. With its unique violet-blue coloration and white claws, this crayfish is a real eye-catcher. The species reaches a size of around 10 to 15 cm and exhibits a peaceful behavior that makes it ideal for community tanks.
We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:
- Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
- Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
- Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium.
Keeping and care
The Hoa Creek crayfish prefers an aquarium of at least 80 liters with smooth gravel and plenty of hiding places. Stones, roots and caves help it to feel safe and comfortable. As Cherax pulcher likes to dig, a stable substrate is important.
Water values and temperature
Temperatures between 22 and 25 °C and a pH value between 6.5 and 7.5 are recommended for optimum care of this crayfish. A medium water hardness of 5 to 12 °dGH supports healthy moulting and promotes the animal's longevity.
Socialization
The Hoa Creek crayfish can easily be kept with peaceful fish and dwarf shrimps. As it occasionally exhibits hunting behavior, small fish or snails should not be kept in the same tank. Plants are often cut through, so the use of robust aquatic plants or artificial alternatives is recommended.
Breeding
Cherax pulcher can be bred successfully with appropriate care. After mating, the female carries 40 to 80 eggs, which hatch after about 6 weeks. The young are particularly sensitive at first and benefit from a separate breeding tank with plenty of hiding places.
Diet
This crayfish is omnivorous and requires a varied diet. In addition to commercially available crayfish food, it likes to eat vegetables such as spinach, pumpkin and nettle. Foliage and occasional protein-rich food such as frozen food or snails round off its diet.
