Blue dwarf crayfish - Cambarellus diminutus
The blue dwarf crayfish (Cambarellus diminutus) originates from the south of the USA and is the smallest representative of its genus. With a maximum size of around 3 to 4 cm, it is perfect for small aquariums. Its striking, bright blue coloration makes it an eye-catcher in any tank. These peaceful crayfish are ideal for beginners as they are easy to care for and adaptable.
We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:
- Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
- Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
- Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium
Keeping and care
Keeping the blue dwarf crayfish is relatively uncomplicated. It requires an aquarium of at least 30 to 40 liters that offers sufficient hiding places such as roots, stones and plants. Dark gravel and fine plants, such as Java moss or Java fern, are ideal, as they offer protection and places of retreat. It is important to structure the aquarium well to avoid territorial behavior.
Water values and temperature
The Cambarellus diminutus prefers soft to medium-hard water with a pH value between 6.5 and 7.5. The ideal water temperature is between 20 and 24 °C. Regular water changes are essential as these crustaceans are sensitive to high nitrate levels.
Socialization
The blue dwarf crayfish is a peaceful companion and can easily be kept with dwarf shrimps and small, peaceful fish. Species such as mosquito danios or small characins are good companions. However, they should not be kept with other crayfish species or very bottom-oriented fish, as this can lead to stress.
Breeding
Cambarellus diminutus can usually be bred without any problems. After mating, the female carries around 20 to 30 eggs under her abdomen, from which young crayfish hatch after around 5 weeks. These remain with the mother for some time before they become independent. Hiding places and dense planting in the tank are essential to protect the young crayfish from cannibalism.
Diet
The blue dwarf crayfish is omnivorous and feeds on leftover food, algae, plant material and special crayfish food. Variety is important, so the food should be supplemented with frozen food and vegetable matter such as zucchinis or spinach. A balanced diet contributes to its bright blue coloration.
