Blue Florida crayfish - Procambarus alleni
The blue Florida crayfish (Procambarus alleni) is known for its intense blue coloration, which is caused by an enzyme defect and makes the animals particularly striking. In aquaria they reach sizes of 10 to 12 cm, while in the wild they can even grow up to 15 cm. This robust and adaptable species is suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:
- Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
- Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
- Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium
Keeping and care
For the Blue Florida crayfish, a tank with a length of at least 60 cm is recommended for a single animal, for pairs the aquarium should be 80 cm. As these crayfish like to dig and climb, numerous hiding places such as caves, stones and robust roots should be provided. A tightly closed cover is essential to prevent the animals from escaping.
Water values and temperature
The blue Florida crayfish prefers a water temperature between 18 and 26 °C and a pH value between 6 and 8. The water hardness should be medium, as they need some calcium for their shell. Regular water changes are important to ensure high water quality and oxygen saturation.
Socialization
Procambarus alleni is a loner and prefers its own territory. Socialization with peaceful fish and dwarf shrimps is possible, but no other crayfish species or bottom-dwelling fish should be present, as these can cause stress. Smaller snails are also in danger of being regarded as food.
Breeding
Breeding the Blue Florida crayfish is relatively easy, provided the aquarium offers sufficient space and hiding places. After mating, females carry up to 100 eggs on their swimming legs, which hatch around 4-6 weeks later. It is important for the young crayfish to have plenty of hiding places, as they can occasionally be hunted by the adults.
Diet
This crayfish is an omnivore. Its diet should include both animal and plant foods. In addition to food tablets and spirulina, vegetables such as spinach and peas are also popular. Frozen food, tubifex and small snails are suitable for the necessary protein intake. A varied diet supports strong coloration and healthy growth.
