Blue Brick crayfish - Cherax wagenknechtae
The Blue Brick crayfish (Cherax wagenknechtae) is known for its fascinating blue-turquoise coloration, which is an absolute eye-catcher in any aquarium. We offer you the following options when selecting our crayfish:
- Gender selection: Choose between a male or a female, depending on what you need for your aquarium.
- Pair: One male and one female, ideal for observing natural behaviors or starting a breeding.
- Breeding group: Consists of one male and two females, ideal for more effective breeding and interesting social dynamics in the aquarium.
Keeping and care
An aquarium of 80 liters or more offers sufficient space for the Blue Brick crayfish. The crayfish prefers a structured setup with lots of hiding places made of stones and roots, as it likes to withdraw. It is important to secure the furnishings securely as the crayfish occasionally digs.
Water values and temperature
The Blue Brick crayfish feels at home at temperatures between 20 and 25 °C and prefers a pH value in the neutral to slightly alkaline range (6.5 to 7.5). The water hardness should be between 5 and 15 °dGH. Regular water changes are important to ensure high water quality.
Socialization
The Blue Brick Crayfish is a peaceful tankmate that can be kept with shrimps and small, peaceful fish. It is not recommended to keep it with bottom-dwelling species, as these could occasionally be perceived as competition.
Breeding
Cherax wagenknechtae can be successfully bred in the aquarium. Females carry up to 50 eggs after mating, which hatch after around 7-9 weeks. Young crayfish require numerous hiding places to reduce the risk of cannibalism.
Diet
This crayfish is omnivorous and prefers a varied diet. In addition to special crayfish food, it likes to eat vegetable food such as spinach and leaves, as well as the occasional frozen food. This diet supports its intense coloration and healthy growth.
