Keeping and care
The Apricot crayfish requires an aquarium of 80 liters or more with plenty of hiding places such as caves and rocks. Sand is recommended as a substrate, as this makes digging and burrowing easier. Plants usually remain intact as Cherax holthuisi shows little interest in damaging them.
Water values and temperature
Temperatures between 20 and 25 °C and a pH value of 6.5 to 7.5 are ideal for keeping the Apricot crayfish. The total hardness should be between 5 and 25 °dGH. Regular water changes support its health and optimal shell development.
Socialization
Cherax holthuisi can be socialized well with dwarf shrimps and smaller, peaceful fish. However, aquatic snails could be considered as food. Its peaceful nature makes it an ideal companion for mixed aquaria.
Breeding
Breeding the apricot crayfish is easy: after mating, females carry up to 50 eggs on their swimming legs, from which the young crayfish hatch after around 7 to 9 weeks. It is advisable to separate the young from the parents to avoid cannibalism. Hiding places in the rearing tank are essential.
Diet
This crayfish is omnivorous and prefers a varied diet. In addition to special crayfish food, it likes to eat vegetables such as spinach and pumpkin, leaves and frozen food. A balanced diet promotes its health and vibrant coloration.
